What a Comeback! Charge Use Big Second Half to Down Boyertown 5-3

Sept. 15, 2019 -- Sometimes it's not how you start, but how you finish that matters. That was certainly true Sunday at Douglass Park, as the Methacton United Charge overcame a 3-0 deficit to stun Boyertown 5-3.

Things looked bleak early for the Charge, as Boyertown scored a goal in the first minute of play off the opening tap. Eight minutes later, they struck again to go up 2-0. Grace and Ava both had shots on goal, but the Charge struggled to sustain pressure on offense. When Boyertown went up 3-0 midway through the half, it looked like it may not be the Charge's day.

However, Tessa, Riley and Sophia all made great hustle plays to sprint back on defense and stop potential Boyertown breakaways, and Jessa made a good two-handed save in goal to give the Charge some momentum.

The Charge slowly began to mount their attack as the half progressed. With under a minute to go, Bryce hustled back to get the ball on defense, moving it up to Tessa, who passed ahead to Grace. Grace took one touch and buried a shot in the back of the net just before time expired. It was just the spark the Charge needed.

In what is becoming a pattern, the Charge came out of the break with plenty of energy and dominated the second half. The shots on goal came fast and furious. First it was Violet. Then Brooke sent a shot over the crossbar off a pass from Cailyn. Brooke out-sprinted the Boyertown defense and hit a shot off the post. A great ball from Tessa found Jessa alone at the top of the box, and Jessa's shot also went off the post. Despite the near-misses, the Charge didn't let up.

Minutes later, Jessa got another chance and left no doubt about it, blasting a shot past the goalie to make the score 3-2. Tessa and Jessa teamed up once again, with Tessa hitting a wide open Jessa at midfield. Jessa dribbled in and drilled a goal that tied the game.

With the Charge seemingly always on the attack, some nice passing between Grace, Sophia and Brooke resulted in an own goal by Boyertown to give the Charge a 4-3 lead. Grace one-timed a beautiful cross from Brooke to put the exclamation point on an exciting second-half comeback and 5-3 victory.

Boyertown tried to stage a comeback of their own late in the second half, but the Charge's defense was stout. Sam stepped up a couple times from her defensive position to clear the ball, and Penny played well in goal to keep Boyertown off the board.

With the win, the Charge improved to 2-0 in the Central League heading into a rematch against Marple Newtown in the Charge's home opener Sept. 22.
