Battle of the Charge II Ends in Tie

Nov. 17, 2019 -- Methacton and Haverford left the field with the Battle of the Charge still undecided after a 1-1 tie on a cold, gray afternoon at Heebner Park. It was the second time in two weeks that the teams had played to a 1-1 tie.

Methacton started strong and was on the attack in the opening minutes. Grace had a throw-in to Penny, who centered to Violet for a scoring chance. Then, a clearing pass from Grace found Brooke at midfield, and Brooke raced past the defense and fired a shot on goal. Haverford's best opportunity of the half came in the form of a one-on-none breakaway, but Jessa sprinted out of the net to clear the ball, sending a long kick ahead to Brooke, who immediately went on the attack. Violet, Ava and Grace teamed up for a few good chances, with Violet having several good throw-ins over the defense to create offense. Jessa played well in goal to stymie the Haverford attack and send Methacton into the break in a scoreless tie.

Methacton came out of halftime with good pressure by Brooke, Sophia and Jessa. Sam, who stepped up from defense multiple times throughout the game to play the ball back into the attacking end, sent a good cross to Brooke, whose shot went just wide. However, after Methacton had controlled play for most of the game, it was Haverford who scored first, on a fluke goal midway through the second half. A hard shot by Haverford hit off a defender and past a diving Penny into the net.

Just when it looked like Methacton may have to surrender the Charge name, Brooke, Grace and Cailyn sustained a long attack in the Haverford end of the field. Fans could sense that a goal was imminent, and they were right. Sam played the ball up to Cailyn on the right side, and Cailyn sent a pretty centering pass to Brooke, who buried the shot to tie the game 1-1. Methacton continued to get chances to push for the win. Tessa made a nice run down the right side, and a few minutes later, Bryce booted the ball ahead and hustled down the left flank. Violet, Riley and Jessa passed well to generate a few more shots.

Methacton finished the season with a Central League record of 4-1-4 and their Charge nickname in tact. They will take a short break from training before resuming team activities this winter.
