4th ANNUAL MARC J. SMALL MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

it is my pleasure to announce the winners of 2011 Marc J. Small Scholarships.

·         Allison Scavello
·         Grant Diener

Allison and Grant were selected based on their applications, recommendations from their coaches and a personal reference. The club and Marc’s family felt that Allison and Grant best demonstrated the traits of strength, bravery and character. These qualities were the foundations of Marc’s persona and part of the reason we honor him today.

Marc J. Small was a Lower Providence resident. He played soccer throughout his youth for Methacton United Soccer Club and Methacton High School. Marc was a special Forces Medic serving in the United States Army in Afghanistan.

As evidence of his intelligence, commitment, and courage, Marc rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, led his class in medical training and earned the elite “Green Beret”. Marc became a medic to care for his Army team as well as some of the poorest, most oppressed people on earth. Marc had only been in Afghanistan three weeks, but during that time he treated 40 patients a day, and built a relationship with the local people and children..

On February 12, 2009 Marc was killed in action in service to a grateful nation. While his loss is very difficult for everyone who knew him; they know his heroism and sacrifice, like so many others, was in defense of freedom and liberty.

The scholarships were presented last night at MHS Awards Night by Marc’s sister Heather and friend John. The scholarship includes a $2,500 award to be used for their continued education. They received a plaque and their names are displayed on a perpetual plaque at the school.

Congratulations to Allison and Grant! We hope this award will inspire all Methacton soccer players continue to develop strength, bravery and character in the years ahead.

Best wishes for a successful future,
